«b»Amalaric«/b», or in «u»Spanish «/u» and «u»Portuguese «/u», «i»Amalarico«/i», (502«u»[1]«/u» \endash 531) was a son of king «u»Alaric II «/u» and of Theodegotho, daughter of «u»Theodoric the Great «/u» and his first wife. Amalaric was himself king of the «u»Visigoths «/u» from 526 till he was assassinated in 531.
He was a child when his father fell in battle against «u»Clovis I «/u», king of the «u»Franks «/u», in 507. «u»Gesalec «/u» was chosen king and the child Amalaric was carried for safety into «u»Hispania «/u». After Gesalec was killed in 511, the country and «u»Provence «/u» was thenceforth ruled by Amalaric's maternal grandfather, «u»Theodoric «/u» the Ostrogoth, acting through his vice regent, «u»Theudis «/u», an Ostrogothic nobleman. In 522 the young Amalaric was proclaimed king, and four years later, on Theodoric's death, he assumed full royal power in Hispania and that part of «u»Languedoc «/u» called «u»Septimania «/u», relinquishing «u»Provence «/u» to his cousin «u»Athalaric «/u». He married «u»Chrotilda «/u», daughter of «u»Clovis I «/u»; but his disputes with her, he being an «u»Arian «/u» and she a «u»Catholic «/u», brought on him the penalty of a Frankish invasion by «u»Childebert I «/u», king of «u»Paris «/u». Amalaric was defeated at «u»Narbonne «/u» in 531 and retreated behind the walls of «u»Barcelona «/u», where he was assassinated by his own troops.
