Anecdote:
- Family remembrances indicate that Austin ran away from home
after his father remarried because he didn't get along with his
stepmother. Reportedly, he was taken in by a Preacher's
family. No hard documentation has been found for him until his
marriage to Irena in 1870. They lived for an extended period in
Bates County, Missouri, prior to moving the family to Oklahoma
during the era of the Cherokee Strip land rushes. Irena
obtained a parcel of land in her own name during this period.
Austin and Irena were Quaker missionaries in Oklahoma, and
Austin was usually addressed as Reverend. Their
last assignment was at Big Jim's Mission near Norman, Oklahoma
where they supported the Big Jim band of Absentee Shawnee
Indians. In spite of raising their children in the Quaker
church, no records have been found to suggest that any of the
children followed their parents faith as adults.
