He married, firstly, «u»Elizabeth Mure of Rowallan«/u», daughter of «u»Sir Adam Mure of Rowallan «/u» and «u»Janet Mure «/u», on 22 November 1347, by Papal dispensation, which legitimised their previously born children.«sup»3«/sup» He married, secondly, «u»Eupheme de Ross, Countess of Moray «/u», daughter of «u»Hugh de Ross, 4th Earl of Ross «/u» and «u»Margaret Graham «/u», on 2 May 1355, by Papal dispensation.«sup»4«/sup» He died on 19 April 1390 at age 74 at «u»Dundonald Castle, Ayrshire, Scotland «/u».«sup»4«/sup» He was buried at «u»Scone Abbey, Scone, Perthshire, Scotland «/u».«sup»5«/sup»

Before his accession, he had been successively joint and sole regent in David II's absence. During his reign, from 1384, his two sons were the real rulers for their unmilitary father.
