Montgomery 1605 Chancellor of Oxford University, succeeded to Wilton 1630, employed Inigo Jones to spectacularly rebuild Wilton House starting 1635, huge family group portrait by «b»Van Dyck«/b» 1634-6 hangs on wall of Double Cube Room, much of house destroyed in fire 1647, carried on building, neither he nor «b»Inigo Jones«/b» (died 1652) lived to see the completion of the work in 1653. Gentleman of the Privy Chamber 1603-25; Chamberlain of Anglesey, Caernarvenshire and Merionethshire 1605-50; High Steward of Oxford University 1615-41, Westminster 1628-50, the Duchy of Cornwall 1630 and Exeter 1635. Lord Lt. of Kent 1624, Buckinghamshire 1628-41, Somerset 1630-43, Wiltshire 1630-50 and Cornwall 1630-42. Lord Chamberlain 1626-41. Vice Adm. of South Wales.Fought on the Parliamentarian side in the Civil War. Member of the Committee of Safety in 1642 and of the Assembly of the Divines in 1643; Govr of the Isle of Wight 1642-47; Capt. Gen. of the West 1642 and Commissioner for the Admlty 1645. He was voted a dukdon by Parliament in 1645.
