Two days before «b»Fastolf«/b»'s death in 1459 his will was changed in favor of «b»John Paston«/b», who received all the manors, lands, and personal property in Norfolk and Suffolk. Suspecting foul play, the other executors were outraged, and seventeen years of claims and counter-claims, law suits, forcible evictions, arrests, and even imprisonment ensued for both «b»John Paston I«/b» and his estate manager «b»Richard Call«/b». In a letter dated Oct 1461, «b»Call«/b», writing from the Norwich gaol, informs «b»John Paston II«/b» that «b»William Yelverton«/b» and «b»William Jenney«/b», two of «b»Fastolf«/b»'s executors, had him arrested and jailed for the theft of the rents from the disputed manor at Cotton: they "«i»hathe certified vup in-to the Kynges Benche jnsurrec[i]ons [and] congregacions a-yenste me«/i»." And unless «b»Call«/b» posted security that he would appear in court in London, the sheriff threatened to "«i»send me vp with strengthe of men as a presoner«/i»." Clearly the sheriff backed the claims of «b»Paston«/b»'s enemies. «b»Call«/b» concludes hopefully, "«i»God sende us a good scheryf thys yere«/i»". In a letter dated May 3, 1465, «b»Margaret Paston«/b» informed her husband ABT the «b»Duke of Suffolk«/b»'s attack on their manor at Hellesdon: "«i»I have put youre evydens«/i» «i»that com owte of the abbay in a seck, and enseylyd hem vnder Richard Call ys seall«/i»".
