  • Name Hamon le Strange
    Gender Male
    Death Yes, date unknown
    Notes
    • prominent in the King's service until his death, probably in the Holy Land, early in 1274/5 (Cal. Patent Rolls, 1272-81, p. 81; Cal. Fine Rolls, vol. i, p. 21). In 1266/7 the King granted to him and his heirs the manor of Ellesmere, until he should provide for them to the value of 100 l. a year in land (Cal. Patent Rolls, 1266-72, p. 39). BEF his death «b»Hamon«/b» purported to enfeoff «b»Roger«/b» in Ellesmere and Coolmere (Shropsh., vol. x, p. 197; Cal. Fine Rolls, vol. i, p. 21), but the validity of the feoffment was questioned after «b»Hamon«/b»'s death, and «b»Roger«/b» obtained a fresh grant from the King for life (Cal. Patent Rolls, 1272-81, p. 125; 1307-13, pp. 156, 493). «b»Hamon«/b», who was Sheriff of Hants, was granted Chawton in that county in fee before 30 Dec 1271 (Cal. Charter Rolls, vol. ii, p. 178), and this may have invalidated the conditional grant of Ellesmere. Chawton passed to his brother «b»Robert«/b» (Cal. Patent Rolls, 1272-81, p. 442; Cal. Close Rolls, 1272-79,
      p. 203)."
