1971 Polk City Directory for South Bend, IN shows Donald as the owner of Whiteman Coal & Wood at 1011 S. Walnut Street (corner of Walnut and Sample Street). The same address is listed for Sanders Lumber & Sawmill. 1972-3 show no listings for Whiteman Coal & Wood, however, in 1974 and 1975, Donald is listed in the City Directory as an engineer for Sanders.
Today I went to what I thought was Sanders' Saw Mill and found that the name had been changed to Walnut Street Hardwoods, Inc. I spoke with Bob House, a lumber salesman who knew Don Whiteman. He said that Whiteman Coal & Wood and Sanders' Saw Mill were two separate businesses that co-existed in the same location. Whiteman Coal & Wood was located in a small shed type building that used to sit where the current parking lot is. There used to be a railroad track that ran beside the sawmill, and that used to bring in the coal. Behind the shed was an awning over a weigh scale where Don used to weigh out the coal. Mr. House told me that Don had a very rough last few years and had spent some time in the hospital. psg 7-26-2004
