Nathan and Sarah lived in Saline Twp., Miller Co., MO in 1860. Nathan was an apprentice at the cooper trade for 5 years before farming in Adams Twp. He was drafted May 14,1864, Sandusky, Ohio from Seneca Co., entered on duty May 28, 1864 as a Private in Co H, 126th OVI. During the Battle of Monocacy in Maryland on July 9, 1864, he was captured by the confederate and was held prisoner of war. Confined first Lynchburg, VA, then at Danville, VA, then at Salisbury, NC, during his imprisonment he was kept on short rations with nothing to eat but a small quantity of coarse corn bread or cake which frequently was very sour. He developed chronic diarrhea which made him so weak he could hardly stand or walk when he was released on Feb 22, 1865, by prisoner exchange at Annapolis MD.
Nathan Rine served with 126th Ohio Infantry Company H during the Civil War. He signed on for 100 days from May 14, 1864 through June 22, 1865 . He was a POW from July 9, 1864 to June 22, 1865. He fought in the Battle of Monocacy (Maryland) under Colonel Lyman J. Jackson. The Confederates under LT. Gen. Jubal Early took the field but the battle kept the Confederates out of Washington till another army moved up to reinforce Colonel Jackson (by Maj. Gen. Lew Wallace).
Spelling of Nathan Rine's name on the 126th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry roster was Ryan. He was 35 yrs old. Mustered in May 12, 1864 for 3 yrs, and as stated above, was captured July 9, 1864 at the battle of Monocacy, MD, returned to company FEB- 1865; mustered out June 22, 1865 by order of the War Department.
Information here is from David Schoewe who's mother is Helen Rine Schoewe:
He spent more than a year in Confederate prisons (including Lynchburg, Danville, and Libby at Richmond) before being exchanged and honorably discharged at the end of the Civil War. Nathan Rine returned to his family and farming. In 1877 he established his homestead, which today is the family farm near Green Springs, Ohio. (Seneca Co, Adams Twp. ) There are Rine family keepsakes. A Grand Army of the Republic Medal on a Carved Pocket Knife . The pocket knife was Nathan Rine's and carries the inscription: "Danville" on one side and "October 26, 1864" on the reverse side.
Rita Standage has a copy of the 126th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Roster and his Military Pension. On his pension papers, he signed his name NATHAN RYANE also has NATHAN RINE and NATHAN RYAN on them .
