Hengrave Hall, Bury St. Edmunds, England

Margaret died in December 1561 and Thomas Kytson the younger became own er of the Hall. In the early part of Queen Elizabeth's reign Thomas Kyts on seems to have been an object of suspicion to the Court party, a nd as he was an intimate friend of
the Duke of Norfolk he was involved in difficulties for some time after th at noble's downfall. A few years afterwards however, the Queen did not dis dain to visit Hengrave on her progress to and from Norwich in 1578,"whe re in very deed the fare
and banquet did so far exceed a number of other places that it is wort hy of mention. A show representing the fayries as well as might be was the re seen, in which a riche Jewell was presented to the Queen's Highness ". It was on this occasion
that the Queen knighted Thomas Kytson.

Sir Thomas, at one time evidently compromised on the religious issue, prom ising the Queen to attend Protestant services, but soon after we find h is wife in prison for refusing to do so and both are on the list of recusa nts drawn up in March
      1588.

Following his father's example Sir Thomas left Hengrave to his widow, Eliz abeth for life in 1602. Margaret, their elder daughter and her husband di ed in the lifetime of Elizabeth Kytson and Hengrave reverted to Mary, wi fe of Thomas, lord Darcy
      of Chich.
