Following tradition, the Mari family lived in the community of St. Come du Mont (Normandy). There was a Mari Street named after «b»Ralph«/b», first sire de Mari, friend of the sire of Sainte Marie du Mont and the dukes of Denmark.
According to legend, «b»Ralph«/b» was secretly married to the daughter of the «b»lord of Mont Haguez«/b». They had a son, «b»Richard I de Mari«/b», or Richard the Old, who is attributed with the founding of the churches of Sainte Come du Mont, de Bohon, and de Meautis in 950.
«b»Richard de Mari«/b» (or Meri) married «b»Billeheude«/b» (Billeheust). This information comes from a document concerning the Bohon priory. «b»Billeheude«/b» is sometimes considered the daughter of a certain «b»Richard de Billeheust«/b» or «b»Richard de Saint Sauveur«/b». In the family we find a «b»Bileud«/b» or «b»Bilelde«/b», but at a later date she is considered the daughter of «b»Neel II of Saint Saveur«/b», one of the principal barons who revolted against «b»William the Bastard«/b» during his youth.
Because of the uncertain relations with the Norsemen who landed at Contentin and their chief, «b»Rollo«/b», there was a strong desire to unite the conquering and native peoples. The «b»Mari«/b» family also desired to hold onto their Christian origins and remain loyal to the dukes of Normandy. «b»Richard de Mari«/b» had three sons: «b»Richard«/b», «b»Humphrey«/b», and «b»Enjuger«/b».
