William Ruthven, 1st Lord Ruthven held the office of Hereditary Sheriff of Perthshire in 1471.«sup»2«/sup» He sat in Parliament among the feudal barons as Laird of Ruthven.«sup»2«/sup» He held the office of Conservator of a Truce with England in 1484.«sup»2«/sup» He was invested as a Knight in January 1483/84.«sup»2«/sup» He fought in the Battle of Sauchieburn in 1488, where he sided with King James III against the rebel nobles.«sup»2«/sup» He was created «i»1st Lord Ruthven [Scotland]«/i» on 29 January 1487/88.«sup»2«/sup» He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.)
