Notes |
- In 1576 «b»William Paulet«/b» succeeded his father as «b»third Marquess of Winchester«/b», and «b»Paulet«/b» lived until 1598. During that time England had no dukes and no other marquesses, so «b»Winchester«/b» stood alone above the earls. And yet he received only twelve votes for the Garter during the entire period. His record is particularly sad compared to that of his cousin«b» Sir Hugh Paulet«/b», who received twenty-eight votes in the last five years of his life, 1569-73. «b»Sir Hugh«/b»'s son, «b»Sir Amias Paulet«/b» received twenty-three votes in the period 1580-85. The «b»Marquess of Winchester«/b»'s problem was that he was a stay-at-home, whose best Garter year, four votes in 1580, coincided with his only significant office, Lord Lieutenant of Dorset.
