- The following excerpts are from records Fred Mabee kept.
Desert Claim -- Southeast 1/4 of Sec. 3, 19, 22. In 1914 I
broke 35 acres and sowed it to winter wheat.
In 1915 I broke 40 acres and sowed 75 acres to winter wheat
that fall. I harvested 35 acres of winter wheat that fall and
received 280 bushel. I also built a reservoir on the claim that
year which cost me $50. This: said dam washed out in 1916.
In 1916, 75 acres of winter wheat froze out and reseeded it to
spring wheat and threshed 750 bushel from this field that fall.
I broke 65 acres of sod and seeded it to winter wheat.
In 1917 I sowed 30 acres to flax and it never came up. I
harvested 65 acres of winter wheat and got 390 bushel, summer
fallowed 20 acres and September 20, went to war.
In 1918 I hired 70 acres sowed to spring wheat and harvested 40
acres and the balance hailed out. Threshed 100 bushel from this
40 acres.
In 1919 I hired 80 acres sowed to spring wheat and harvested 30
acres, the balance dried out. Threshed 70 bushel off of this 30
acres. I have sowed 65 acres to winter wheat this fall and have
fall plowed 20 acres of the other land for spring wheat. I have
built a fence on the claim this year, 1/2 mile on the west side
of the quarter and 1/2 mile on the south side of the quarter.
Value of improvements: Breaking 140 acres at $6 an
acre--$840.00; Wire and posts and work--$125.00; Work and
lumber for dam $50.00, total of $1,015.00.

- Fred was in the service during WWI and a May 23, 1918 news item
stated he was home on a six week's furlough and spent the time
working on his place.

| Anecdote |
- Fred Mabee was born in Parker, South Dakota in 1887. He had
homesteaded in North Dakota before coming to Montana in 1909.
He freighted from Hilger to Kendall until 1912 when he filed
for a desert claim nine miles north of Roy, where he lived
until his passing in October of 1972.

- Oliver W. Mabee, son of Oliver D. and Susan Mabee, was born in
Ontario Canada on Feb 17,1857. He moved to Lincoln County, Iowa
with his parents when he was 14 years old. The family moved to
Sioux City, Iowa , and in 1876 they came to Turner County, D.T.
and homesteaded in Germantown township. He married Ida L.
Chrisman in 1883. They were parents of 2 children: Susie (Mrs.
Roy Costain), and Fred. Ida died in 1887 and in 1888 he married
Emma L. Chrisman, sister of his first wife . They were parents
of a daughter, Ida Mabee Kilpatrick. They also gave home to a
niece , Ethel Cheney (Mrs. Fred Polley). In 1910 Fred W . Mabee
and his family moved into Parker. He died on April 7, 1932 .
