though «b»James Metcalf«/b» had a daughter called «b»Elizabeth«/b» she could not have been this person. «b»James Metcalf«/b» married relatively late, but it is thought that he made a first marriage to «b»Elizabeth Scrope«/b» who brought him property in Sledmere. She was the daughter of «b»Sir John Scrope 5th Baron Scrope«/b» according to some theories. Curiously «b»James Metcalf«/b»'s father was addressed by this «b»Lord Scrope«/b» in one document as brother, and this was further evidence for their children being married. At the time if your child was married to someone else's child then you would address the other in-law as brother. A «b»James«/b» and «b»Elizabeth Metcalf«/b» were married members of the same Guild of Corpus Christi that «b»Sir Robert Constable«/b» and «b»Beatrice«/b» were members of in about 1490. They were probably the «b»James«/b» and «b»Elizabeth Metcalf«/b» who were involved in a land sale in 1488, the same landsale that «b»Thomas Metcalfe«/b» and «b»Elizabeth«/b» his wife was also involved in. «b»James Metcalf«/b» had a father called «b»Thomas «/b»and mother called «b»Elizabeth«/b» who could have been living in 1488. One of «b»Robert«/b» and «b»Beatrice Constable's«/b» daughters were«b» «/b»married to the grandaughter of another member of the Guild, it was obviously a place where people of like social status could meet. It is interesting that in the 'Dorso' of a legal document (Yorkshire Deeds, 8, p 47, YAS RS) dated 26 Mar 1539 one of the people mentioned is «b»Robert Constable of Sledmere«/b», «b»James«/b» had a brother called «b»Robert«/b», who unfortunately did not leave a Will. This mention is very curious. More evidence will probably come to light in time. «b»John, Lord Scrope«/b» married as his second wife «b»Elizabeth St John«/b». «b»Elizabeth St John«/b» was a member of «b»Henry VII's«/b» family, descended from his grandmother. She had a daughter «b»Mary«/b» who was married to «b»Sir William Conyers«/b» in 1479 and it would seem likely that this «b»Elizabeth«/b» would be the mother of our «b»Elizabeth«/b».
