Obituary |
- Mr. Burton L. Maybee moved to Tottenham from Trenton in about
1909 and took over the furniture and undertaking business from
the estate of Mr. W. J. Verney.
His family consisted of his wife, Mary Knapp and three
children, Margaret Honora E. [Percy Stanley], Fanny Helen [F.
Clinton Craig] and William Howard [Mary Jane Stollery]. Another
son Burton Maxwell [Isobel] was born in Tottenham. They lived
for a year on Mill Street and then bought a home on Wilson St.
At that time, there were no automobiles an very few telephones.
All traffic was by horse, and whenever a death occurred,
someone had to drive to the undertaker's and then he was driven
to the home. Funerals were held from the home, as there was no
funeral parlor.
Automobiles appeared later. Mr. Maybee had about the first one
in town.
Mr. Maybee served on the town council for sometime and he and
his family were active in the work of the Methodist Church.
The family of Mr. Maybee was of Untied Empire Loyalist descent.
They have records of their beginnings in France as early as
1518. From there, they went to Holland and then to New York. As
they were Loyalists, they came to Canada in 1783 after the
revolution.
Mr. Maybee's father William Henry Maybee lived on a farm near
Trenton. His brother Milton Edgar, was M.M.P. for
Northumberland for a number of years. They are buried as are
Mr. & Mrs. B.L. Maybee, the country cemetery of Carrican Church
near Brighton.
Mr. Maybee carried on business until 1917, when he became ill
at the age of 49. His widow ran the business for a couple of
years, when she sold it and moved her family to Toronto.
In 1971, the daughter Honora [Mrs. Peter Stanley] moved with
their family to Tottleham. Their daughter, Eillen married
Thomas Little and they have two sons, Blake and Curits. They
live at 29 Alphonsus Court. They also had a son Ronald Percy
Stanley
