      the wagon when his parents left their home in New York and came
      to Wisconsin. William was about 7 years old at that time. My
      mother said he was a very smart man when it came to remembering
      dates and ages. He could remember all his children's birthdates
      and how old they were and even his grandchildren and
      great-grandchildren. He also used to count to his children in
      Dutch (or perhaps Deutsch). He was always a man of good humor
      and liked to tell his jokes. [8]
