| Anecdote |
- Amealiasburgh Twp. is fortunate to have had as part of it's
history on of those rare people reputed to be a clairvoyant for
fortune teller. this man, Malcolm Maybee, known as Malley
Maybee, was born in St. Ola in 1867. He claimed to be a seventh
son of a seventh son and been with a caul of veil over his
face. He remarked that he had this particular gift because the
veil when being removed was lifted upward.
Maybee's earlier years were spent as a wood ranger and
prospector for the lumber company of Gill and Fortune of
Trenton at Gilmour. He knew the north country like a book.
Although he always had rocks around his house he never invented
any valuable minerals he often wandered through the woods in
search of wild herbs such as ginseng, the root he used in
medicine.
Malley married Lucy Ann Birkett in 1890 at St. Ola. She was a
Quaker, In 1922 they moved to Trenton and resided for three
years with their son and family. In 1925 he purchased a farm on
the Second Concession of Ameliasburgh two miles east of Highway
33. He died there in 1937. Lucy then moved in with their son
and family in Trenton and did some practical nursing. She
passed away in 1949. Malley and Lucy are buried in the Carrying
Place Cemetery.
Malley was a short stocky man with a moustache, who was known
far and wide for his predictions and his ability to tell people
where to find lost possessions. Neighbors recall the many cars
owned by visitors who came to make use of Mr. Maybee's strange
gift. Maybe never told fortunes on Sunday. He had two crystal
balls which he would turn in his hand and study. many friends
had great faith in his predictions and would bring their
friends from the USA and other places across the country. Ross
Snider, a neighbor, reported helping some callers start their
bulky cars upon occasion at the Maybee's home. Mrs. Thomas
Thompson recalled that she and her son walked from a mile west
of Rednersville to the Maybee's home in the winter of 1933-34
to get his assistance in locating a body of her husband who had
drowned in December. The body was found in April in the spot
where Maybee predicted.
Lost animals, stolen produce and missing valuables were some of
the problems that Maybee helped solve. Others were
light-hearted. How did Mr. Maybee know that Bob & Mable Bownes'
foster son was sitting under a tree on the edge of a hill
(which turned out to be Mountain View) talking with a friend
about running away from home, using the neighbor's grey-horses,
all the time smoking cigarettes? It is also said he tried in
vain to coax Clarence Vanclief to look into the crystal ball to
see the faces of two girls, one of whom he would someday marry.
No one will ever know if it was Jean's face or not that
appeared.
Malley and Lucy had two children, a daughter Phoebe born in
1892, who died at age three and a son Arthur John born in 1897.
Arthur joined the CNR out of Trenton, and later Belleville, for
47 years as a conductor, retiring in 1962. He passed away in
1971. Bessie is now a resident of Trent Valley Lodge in
Trenton.
Arthur and Bessie had two children, Floyd who lives on Smoke's
Point Rd. in Amealisburgh Twp. and is the current Building
Inspector for the Township; and Audrey who is married to Anrold
Cronkwright. They live in Trenton. Floyd and Audrey each have
two children, and Audrey and Arnold have four grandchildren.
After Mally's death the farm was sold and the house eventually
burnt down. A portion of that land is now a part of Rece
Selman.
