Anecdote |
- Went with parents to Castile, NY about 1816. Settled near
Rockford, IL 1844, then Burlington and Cedar Rapids, IA. Elias
and Giles Mabie constructed the first Baptist Church of Pike,
Wyoming Co. NY 1833. According to his nephew, Giles Turneaure:
"Giles was for many years local and traveling agent for the
John W. Many Manufacturing Co. of Rockford, IL. During the time
was resident agent at Paris, France; while there he went to
London, England, and secured from that country the patent and
sale right to manufacture the Many combined mower and reaper in
England." From this situation perhaps arose the supposition
that he was the inventor of the first reaper."
