Ebles was an illegitimate son of «u»Ranulf II of Aquitaine <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranulf_II_of_Aquitaine>«/u». The meaning of his «u»surname «/u» is disputed. Manzer is a «u»Germanic <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germanic_peoples>«/u» habitational name, but also a Germanic personal name formed from «i»magin«/i», meaning "strength" or "might" (cf «u»«i»magnus <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnus>«/u»«/i»). It may also be a corruption of the «u»Hebrew <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrew_language>«/u» «u»«i»mamzer <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mamzer>«/u»«/i», meaning «i»bastard«/i», hence the appellation sometimes seen, Ebles the Bastard, and his supposed «u»Jewish <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish>«/u» mother. The same surname was used by another Prince from «u»Occitania <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occitania>«/u», «u»Arnaud Manzer «/u», Count of «u»Angoulême <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angoul%C3%AAme>«/u» (born 952-died 988/92) who also was a bastard. This fact makes problematic the speculation about Germanic origin of the surname.
