per Janice Sutherland provide by Pat Lauder, great-granddaughter of James Hill..."Stephen Hill married Elizabeth Reiff in Bowling Green, KY, April 9,1874. James (Elizabeth's son, born out of wedlock to a "James F. Hill") had been in the care of his grandmother (Susan) and his uncle (Henry), in Kentucky, until he was seven. Stephen, Elizabeth and James traveled up to the Bruce Peninsula where Stephen homesteaded for a couple of years. Montelena, Henry, and Susan were born there. Apparently the homesteading didn't work out and the family moved back to Folden's Corners, where Stephen had been raised, near Ingersoll. Stephen built a stone house (which still stands) and began farming. James left Folden's Corners and sought work in the Bruce area, saving his money to give him a start in life. In his 20's, he won a scholarship to an "academy" and earned his high school diploma. He taught a year at the Banner school in Banner where my grandmother lived on a farm across the road from the school. Joseph Spearman wouldn't let James marry his daughter because he didn't think he could support her on a teacher's salary. James went to Michigan and sold insurance, doing so well the company sent him to their home office in New York for advanced training. While there, he decided to study law. He finished up at the Detroit Law School and came back to Banner to marry Elizabeth. They moved to Detroit where James practiced law and was the Director of the Children's Aid Society, until his death from T.B. in 1917.
After Elizabeth's death, Stephen moved back up to the Bruce area and married a second Elizabeth. He died of carcinoma of the liver, April 7, 1928, and was buried at Bayview Cemetery at Wiarton. He was 83. The second Elizabeth, whom Stephen married, died August 6, 1970, of heart disease. She is buried alongside Stephen at Wiarton.
Stephen listed his occupation as carpenter on his children's registry of birth...
