      steward to Henry I like his brother William, who being mainly instr umental inraising Stephen, Earl of Bologne, to the throne upon the decea se of his royal master, was rewarded by this new king with the Earld om of the East Anglia, commonly called Norfolk, and by that designati on we find him styled in 1140 (6th Stephen). Had married twice; by his 1 st wife, Julian, dau. of Alberic De Vere, he had a son, Roger; and by h is 2nd, Gundred, he had two sons, Hugh and William. He was s. by his elde st son, Roger Bigod, 2nd earl.
