Maid of Honour of «u»«b»Queen <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/aboutElizabeth.htm>Elizabeth I <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/aboutElizabeth.htm>«/u»«/b», has been identified with the fair «b»Mrs. Brydges«/b» to whom «u»«b»Essex <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/RobertDevereux(2EEssex).htm>«/u»«/b» showed so much attention as to offend the Queen (Sidney Papers)«b». «/b»Have claimed Sudeley and other parts of the Chandos property as the daughter and coheiress of «b»Giles, the 3rd Lord«/b». In his father's lifetime «b»Grey Brydges«/b» assaulted the lady's representative at a conference held to settle the dispute (Jun 1602). In the following Oct it was proposed that «b»Grey«/b» should marry «b»Elizabeth«/b», but finally, in Dec, when he had become 5th Lord Chandos, it was stated that the controversy had been otherwise 'compounded'.
Immediately after «b»James I«/b»'s accession «b»Elizabeth«/b» married «b»Sir John Kennedy«/b», one of the king's Scotch attendants. «b»Chandos«/b» appears to have opposed the match, and it was rumoured early in 1604 that «b»Kennedy«/b» had a wife living in Scotland. But «b»James I«/b» wrote to Chandos (19 Feb 1603/4) entreating him to overlook «b»Sir John«/b»'s errors because of his own love for his attendant. «b»Elizabeth«/b» apparently left her husband and desired to have the matter legally examined, but as late as 1609 the lawfulness of the marriage had not been decided upon. «b»Lord Chandos«/b» declined to aid his cousin, and she died deserted and in poverty.
