eldest son and heir, was born at Ordsall in 1377. At the age of nineteen he married «b»Clemency«/b», daughter of «b»Hugh de Standish of Duxbury«/b». The mother of «b»Clemency«/b», «b»Alice«/b», was a Standish of Standish, her uncle, «b»Ralph«/b», was Sheriff of Lancashire in 1392, and a cousin, «b»John«/b», was one of the heroes of Agincourt. On their marriage, his father settled on «b»John«/b» the manors of Hope and Shoresworth, and the young couple made their home at Hope Hall. «b»John«/b», like his father, was a soldier, and served in the French wars, wherein he was accorded the honour of knighthood, and remained in active service until his death. He was forty four years of age when his father died, opening «b»John«/b»'s succession to Ordsall, and he remained in possession for twenty-one years. That he was an addict to the extravagant fashions of the day is adduced from the fact that in 1428 he was summoned by his brother, «b»Alured«/b», for an offence against the sumptuary laws, a series of edicts passed in the reigns of «b»Edward II«/b» and «b»Edward III«/b» and renewed more forcibly under «b»Richard II«/b», which sought to restrain undue expenditure on elaborate and fantastic apparel. Proclamations were issued against '«i»outrageous and excessive multitude of meats and dishes which the great men of the kingdom still use in their castles, ... and persons of inferior rank imitating their example beyond what their stations required of their circumstances could afford«/i»'. The lavish hospitality at the hall of Ordsall no doubt made «b»Sir John«/b»'s brothers anxious, lest their own patrimonial portion should be dissipated. «b»Sir John«/b» died 26 Jul 1442 in his sixty-fifth year holding Ordsall by the ancient services. His wife, «b»Clemency«/b», had predeceased him, and he had married again. To his widow, «b»Joan«/b», he left for the period of her life his lands in Flixton, Shoresworth, Hope, and Tockholes.
