Osburga's existence is known only from «u»Asser <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asser>«/u»'s «i»Life of King Alfred«/i». She is not named as witness to any charters, nor is her death reported in the «u»«i»Anglo-Saxon Chronicle <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Saxon_Chronicle>«/u»«/i». It is presumed, but nowhere recorded, that she was also the mother of Alfred's older brothers «u»Æthelstan of Wessex http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86thelstan_of_Wessex«/u», «u»Æthelbald of Wessex <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86thelbald_of_Wessex>«/u», «u»Æthelberht of Wessex <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86thelberht_of_Wessex>«/u», «u»Æthelred of Wessex <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86thelred_of_Wessex>«/u», and of his sister «u»Æthelswith «/u», wife of King «u»Burgred of Mercia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgred_of_Mercia>«/u». The internal chronology of Asser's life suggests that Osburga was alive after the second marriage of Æthelwulf, to the «u»Carolingian <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolingian>«/u» princess «u»Judith <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_of_Flanders>«/u», in 856.
