«b»Liudolf«/b» (died «u»12 March «/u» «u»864 «/u» or 866) was a «u»Saxon «/u» «u»count «/u»; later authors called him duke of the Eastern Saxons. He was also named as count of «u»Eastphalia «/u». Liudolf had possessions in eastern Saxony, and was involved in wars against «u»Normans «/u» and «u»Slavs «/u». The «u»Liudolfing «/u» House, also known as the Ottonian House, is named after him; he is its oldest known member.
Liudolf married Oda, daughter of a «u»Frankish «/u» prince «u»913 «/u», supposedly at the age of 107. By marrying a Frankish nobleman's daughter, Liudolf followed suggestions set forth by «u»Charlemagne «/u» about ensuring the integrity of the «u»Frankish Kingdom «/u» through marriage.
In 845/846, Liudolf and his wife traveled to «u»Rome «/u» in order to ask «u»Pope Sergius II «/u» for permission to found a house of secular canonesses, duly established in Brunshausen around 852, and moved in 881 to form «u»Gandersheim Abbey «/u». Liudolf's daughter Hathumod became its first «u»abbess
«/u»
Liudolf is buried in Brunshausen; his sons «u»Brun
«/u» and «u»Otto
«/u» apparently inherited his property.
