«b»Bruno«/b», «b»Brun«/b», or «b»Braun«/b» (died «u»2 February «/u» «u»880 «/u») was the «u»Duke of Saxony «/u» from 866 to his death. He was the elder son of «u»Liudolf «/u», progenitor of the «u»Liudolfing dynasty «/u» and described as «i»dux orientalis Saxonum«/i», duke of East Saxony. It is possible that Bruno was «i»dux totius Saxonum«/i», duke of all Saxony.
He died, along with several other Saxon noblemen, in a battle against the «u»Vikings «/u» (probably «u»Danes «/u») on 2 February 880.«u»[1]«/u» The battle was a defeat and two bishops were killed. Bruno is listed as one of twelve counts also killed. He is called «i»ducem et fratrem reinæ«/i»: «i»dux«/i» and "the queen's brother," meaning that his sister «u»Liutgard «/u» was married to «u»Louis the Younger «/u». According to «u»Thietmar of Merseburg «/u», Bruno died in a flooded river while on campaign against the Danes in 880. This probably took place during the battle or during a retreat.
According to legend, Bruno is the founder of «u»Brunswick «/u» and ancestor of the «u»Brunonen «/u», counts of Brunswick.
