\ul«/b»Modern «/u» «i»Avraham«/i» «u»Tiberian «/u» , «u»Arabic «/u»: \ul«i»Ibrahim \ulnone«/i», ) is the founding «u»patriarch «/u» of the «u»Israelites «/u», «u»Ishmaelites «/u», «u»Midianites «/u» and «u»Edomite «/u» peoples, as described in the «u»book of Genesis «/u». He is widely regarded as the patriarch of «u»Jews «/u», «u»Christians «/u», and «u»Muslims «/u». It is uncertain to what extent Abraham was a real historical person and to what extent a mythical figure.
According to Genesis, Abraham was originally named «i»Abram«/i» and was of the tenth generation from «u»Noah «/u» and the 20th from «u»Adam «/u». His father's name was «u»Terah «/u», and he had two brothers, «u»Nahor «/u» and «u»Haran «/u». Abraham was sent by «u»God «/u» from his home in «u»Ur Kasdim «/u» and «u»Haran «/u» (perhaps «u»Harran «/u») to «u»Canaan «/u», the «u»land promised «/u» to his descendants by «u»Yahweh «/u».
The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."
\endash \ul«i»Genesis 12:1-3 <http://www.biblegateway.com/bible?passage=Genesis%2012:1-3;&version=NIV;>«/u» (NIV)«/i»
In Canaan, Abraham entered into a «u»covenant «/u»: in exchange for recognition of YHWH as his God, Abraham will be blessed with innumerable progeny and the land would belong to his descendants.«u»[3]«/u» According to «u»Genesis 17:5 «/u», his name was changed by God from Abram (probably meaning "the father is exalted") to Abraham, a name which Genesis explains as meaning "father of many nations."
Judaism, Christianity and Islam are sometimes referred to as the "«u»Abrahamic religions «/u»" because of the progenitor role Abraham plays in their holy books. In the Jewish tradition, he is called «i»Avraham Avinu«/i» or "Abraham, our Father". God promised Abraham that through his offspring, all the nations of the world will come to be blessed («u»Genesis 12:3 <http://bibref.hebtools.com/?book=%20Genesis&verse=12:3&src=HE>«/u»), interpreted in Christian tradition as a reference particularly to «u»Christ «/u». Jews, Christians, and Muslims consider him father of the «u»people of Israel «/u» through his son «u»Isaac «/u» (cf. «u»Exodus 6:3 «/u», «u»Exodus 32:13 «/u») by his wife Sarah. For Muslims, he is a «u»prophet of Islam «/u» and the «u»ancestor «/u» of «u»Muhammad «/u» through his other son «u»Ishmael «/u» \endash born to him by Sarah's servant, «u»Hagar «/u». (Jews and Christians refer to Hagar as Sarah's servant.) Abraham is also a progenitor of the Semitic tribes of the «u»Negev «/u» who trace their descent from their common ancestor «u»Sheba «/u» («u»Genesis 10:28 «/u»).
