Luke 3:36
«b»Arphaxad
«/b»son of Shem, born the year after the «u»Deluge «/u»
He died at the age of 438 years (Gen. 11:10-13; 1 Chr. 1:17, 18; Luke 3:36). He dwelt in Mesopotamia, and became, according to the Jewish historian Josephus, the progenitor of the «u»Chaldeans «/u». The tendency is to recognize in the word the name of the country nearest the ancient domain of the Chaldeans. Some regard the word as an Egypticized form of the territorial name of Ur Kasdim, or Ur of the «u»Chaldees
«/u».

Arpachshad«/b» or «b»Arphaxad«/b» or «b»Arphacsad«/b» («u»Hebrew «/u»: / , «u»Modern «/u» «i»Arpakhshad«/i» «u»Tiberian «/u» / ; «u»Arabic «/u»: ' ', "healer," "releaser") was one of the five sons of «u»Shem «/u», the son of «u»Noah «/u» («u»Genesis «/u» 10:22, 24; 11:10-13; «i»1 Chron.«/i» 1:17-18). His brothers were «u»Elam «/u», «u»Asshur «/u», «u»Lud «/u» and «u»Aram «/u»; he is an ancestor of «u»Abraham «/u». He is said by Gen. 11:10 to have been born two years after the Flood, when Shem was 100.
Arpachshad's son is called «u»Shelah «/u», except in the «u»Septuagint «/u», where his son is «u»Cainan«/u» ( ), Shelah being Arpachshad's grandson. Cainan is also identified as Arpachshad's son in «u»Luke «/u» 3:36 and «u»Jubilees «/u» 8:1.
Other ancient Jewish sources, particularly the «u»Book of Jubilees «/u», point to Arpachshad as the immediate progenitor of Ura and Kesed, who allegedly founded the city of \ul«i»Ur Kesdim \ulnone«/i» (Ur of the Chaldees) on the west bank of the «u»Euphrates «/u» (Jub. 9:4; 11:1-7) \emdash the same bank where «u»Ur «/u», identified by «u»Leonard Woolley «/u» in 1927 as Ur of the Chaldees, is located«u»[1]«/u».
Donald B. Redford has asserted«u»[2]«/u» that Arpachshad is to be identified with «u»Babylon «/u». Until Woolley's identification of Ur, Arpachshad was understood by many «u»Jewish «/u» and «u»Muslim «/u» scholars to be an area in northern «u»Mesopotamia «/u», Urfa of the «u»Yazidis «/u». This led to the identification of Arpachshad with «u»Urfa-Kasid «/u» (due to similarities in the names and ) - a land associated with the «u»Khaldis «/u», whom «u»Josephus «/u» confused with the «u»Chaldean«/u».
Another «i»Arpachshad«/i» is referenced in the «u»deuterocanonical «/u» «u»Book of Judith «/u» as being the "king of the «u»Medes «/u»" contemporary with «u»Nebuchadnezzar II «/u», but this is thought to be a corruption of the historical name «u»Cyaxares «/u» (Hvakhshathra).
