Noah divided the world amongst his three sons, begotten of his wife Titea: viz., to Shem he gave Asia, within the Euphrates, to the Indian Ocean; to Ham he gave Syria, Arabia, and Africa; and to Japhet, the rest of Asia behond the Euphrates, together with Europe to Gadea (or Cadiz).

[«u»edit «/u»] Rabbinic literature
«/b»The \ul«i»Genesis Rabba \ulnone«/i» «u»midrash «/u» lists \ul«b»Naamah \ulnone«/b», the daughter of «u»Lamech «/u» and sister of «u»Tubal-Cain «/u», as the wife of Noah, as does the eleventh century Jewish commentator «u»Rashi «/u».
In the mediaeval midrash «u»Book of Jasher «/u» «u»Chapter 5:15 «/u», the name of Noah's wife is said to be «b»Naamah«/b», daughter of «u»Enoch «/u»; that would mean Noah married his great-aunt.
Gill and others evidently regarded the name «i»Naamah«/i» as resulting from confusion between the names of Ham's wife and Noah's wife in some traditions.

 | The Sacrifice of Noah BASSANO, Jacopo (b. ca. 1515, Bassano, d. 1592, Bassano)
Oil on canvas; Staatliche Schlösser und Gärten, Potsdam-Sanssouci
This work is typical of Bassano's mature painting. The painter uses the biblical episode of Noah coming out of the ark to paint yet again a huge number of animals. This type of composition, where the subject is obviously only an excuse for painting the countryside and nature, especially animals, was a huge success in the art market of the day. Jacopo Bassano and his sons continued to produce many such scenes. |
