«u»Elam «/u»«/b», son of Shem. The «u»Elamites «/u» called themselves the «i»Haltamti«/i» and had an empire (capital «u»Susa «/u») in what is now «u»Khuzistan «/u», modern «u»Iran «/u». «u»Elamite «/u», however, is a non-«u»Semitic «/u» language. It has been controversially grouped with the modern «u»Dravidian «/u» languages, into "«u»Elamo-Dravidian «/u»".

Elam«/b» ( ) in the «u»«b»Hebrew Bible «/u»«/b» («u»Genesis «/u» 10:22, «u»Ezra «/u» 4:9;) is said to be the oldest son of «u»Shem «/u», the son of «u»Noah «/u». It is also used (as in «u»Akkadian «/u»), for the country of «u»Elam «/u»in what is now southern Iran, that the Hebrews believed to be the offspring of Elam, son of Shem. This implies that the Elamites were considered «u»Semites «/u» by the Hebrews, although their language was actually unrelated to the «u»Semitic languages «/u» family. This does not conflict with Hebrew beliefs because the Hebrews believed that the diversity of human languages originated at the Tower of Babel.
Elam (the nation) is also mentioned in Genesis 14, describing an ancient war involving a king of Elam it calls «u»Chedorlaomer «/u».
The prophecies of «u»Isaiah «/u» (11:11, 21:2, 22:6) and «u»Jeremiah «/u» (25:25) also mention Elam, and the last part of Jeremiah 49 is an apocalyptic oracle against Elam, self-dated to the first year of «u»Zedekiah «/u» («u»597 BC «/u»).
The «u»Book of Jubilees «/u» may reflect ancient tradition when it mentions a son (or daughter, in some versions) of 'Elam named "Susan", whose daughter Rasuaya married «u»Arpachshad «/u», progenitor of another branch of Shemites. «u»Shushan «/u» (or Susa) was the ancient capital of the Elamite Empire. (Dan. 8:2)
