Sir Thomas Cheney got him the Winchelsea seat: M.P. for Dover, 1533; for Winchelsea 1553; for Canterbury, 1558; Sheriff of Kent 1546-7. His son Nicholas Crispe (~1530-1564), M.P., Sandwich 1554, 1558, married (1) Frances, daughter of Sir Thomas Cheney, (2) Mary, daughter of Christopher Glemham of Glemham, Suffolk. Sheriff of Kent 1559/60. Predeceased his father. Both Henry and Nicholas were friends of Sir Thomas Cheney and were appointed executors of his Will."

«b»Subject:«/b» Sir Thomas Cheney: Cheneys of Shurland
«b»Author:«/b» Francis Chute
«b»Recipient:«/b» Lionel Chute, Steve Chute, Jacqueline Chute
«b»Date:«/b» MAR 2006
«b»Text:«/b» "Thomas (b. 1485) was known for "the proud and overbearing manner of his youth" (which he later curbed so as to become a successful diplomat and keep in favor with all 5 Tudor monarchs.) He had an elder half-brother Francis, but was free of parental restraint in his youth, because his father had died 1487 when Thomas was 2, and then their uncle John, Lord Cheney of Shurland (the one who fought at Bosworth) died in 1496 when Thomas was 11. So, one may ask, did Charles Chute go to Shurland after 1500, at the request of Suffolk Cheneys, and help teach Thomas to curb his natrual temper so as to survive the vicissitudes of the Tudor Court? (And if so - «i»which«/i» Charles Chute, father or son?)
Sir Thomas Cheney's memorial tomb is at Minster Abbey Church, Sheppey (picture on the internet).
Cheneys were linked by marriage «i»inter alia«/i» ["among other things"] to families of: (1) Sandys: husband of Thomas Cheney's aunt Sir William Sandys of the Vyne; (2) Chideake: wife of Lord Cheney, Thomas Cheney's uncle - Margaret, daughter of Sir John Chideake by Kath. Lumley; (3) Kempe: husband of Thomas Cheney's daughter Catherine - Sir Thomas Kempe of Wye; (4) Sir John Perrot: husband of Thomas Cheney's daughter Anne; (5) Crispe: husband of Thomas Cheney's daughter Frances - Nicholas, son of Sir Henry Crispe.
