lady of the bedchamber to «u»«b»Queen Elizabeth <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/aboutElizabeth.htm>«/u»«/b». The «u»«b»Earl of Oxford «/u»«/b» was retained under house arrest for a short time and, following the Born to «b»Anne Vavasour«/b» of an illegitimate child fathered by him in 1581 («b»Sir Edward Vere«/b»), was briefly in the Tower of London. He had seduced the beautiful «b»Anne Vavasour«/b», and "«i»on Tuesday at night Anne Vavasour was brought to bed of a son in the maidens' chamber. The E. of Oxeford is avowed to be the father«/i»" (Letter of Walsingham, 23 Mar 1580/1, Hist. MSS. Com., Hastings MSS, vol. ii, p. 29). The «u»«b»Earl <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/EdwardDeVere(17EOxford).htm>«/u»«/b» was under restraint for some weeks and not admitted to Court until Jun 1583. «u»«b»Oxford <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/EdwardDeVere(17EOxford).htm>«/u»«/b» and his followers reaped the fruits of this scandal in a duel, and a series of frequent and fatal brawls lasting over several years. The birth of this child led to a long-running feud with «u»«b»Sir Thomas Knyvett <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/ThomasKnyvett(1BEscrick).htm>«/u»«/b», uncle of «b»Anne Vavasour«/b», which resulted in the deaths of three followers of «b»De Vere«/b» and «u»«b»Knyvett <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/ThomasKnyvett(1BEscrick).htm>«/u»«/b» as well as injury to both men.
In 1591 «b»Richard Warburton«/b» was involved in a dispute with the copyholders of the manor of Over Whitley (Whitley Superior), a duchy of Lancaster manor in Cheshire, recently granted to him by the «u»«b»Queen <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/aboutElizabeth.htm>«/u»«/b». «u»«b»Robert Cecil <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/RobertCecil(1ESalisbury).htm>«/u»«/b» was probably his patron at this time, and he certainly was in 1595, when, in Sep, «b»Warburton«/b» wrote from Plymouth excusing his sudden return from a voyage, the purpose of which is not known. It is likely that it was «u»«b»Cecil <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/RobertCecil(1ESalisbury).htm>«/u»«/b» who brought «b»Warburton«/b» in for Bridport in 1601. «b»Thomas Howard, 3rd Viscount Bindon«/b», received nominations at several Dorset boroughs for this Parliament, offering them to «u»«b»Cecil <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/RobertCecil(1ESalisbury).htm>«/u»«/b». «b»Warburton«/b» was named to one committee, concerned with the order of business, 3 Nov 1601. In 1602 «u»«b»Cecil <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/RobertCecil(1ESalisbury).htm>«/u»«/b» secured «b»Warburton«/b» a command at Brill under «u»«b»Sir Francis De Vere <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/FrancisVere.htm>«/u»«/b», who in 1605 urged «u»«b»Salisbury <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/RobertCecil(1ESalisbury).htm>«/u»«/b» to allow him to return quickly to the Low Countries. The remainder of «b»Warburton«/b»'s career lies outside this biography. His widow was granted administration of his estate on 27 Jan 1610, and the new election return was dated 1 Feb 1610. The heir was his only child «b»Cecil«/b», so named after the godfather.
