Darcy was the second (but eldest surviving) son of «u»John Darcy, Lord Conyers «/u», himself the eldest son of «u»Conyers Darcy, 2nd Earl of Holderness «/u». He became his grandfather's heir, styled «b»Lord Conyers«/b» when his father died in 1688 and later inherited the former's earldom in 1692. In 1698 he matriculated «u»fellow-commoner «/u»from «u»King's College, Cambridge «/u».«u»[1]«/u» In 1714, the Earl of Holderness, as he now was, was appointed «u»Lord Lieutenant of the North Riding of Yorkshire «/u» and admitted to the «u»Privy Council «/u» and appointed «u»First Lord of Trade «/u» in 1718. He was also a «u»Lord of the Bedchamber «/u»from 1719 to his death.
On «u»26 May «/u» «u»1715 «/u», Holderness had married «u»Lady Frederica Schomberg «/u» (the eldest surviving daughter of the «u»3rd Duke of Schomberg «/u») and they had two surviving children: «u»Hon. Robert «/u»(1718-1778) and «u»Lady Caroline «/u» (d. 1778, married the «u»4th Marquess of Lothian «/u»
On Lord Holderness' death in 1721, his title passed to his only surviving son, Robert, and his wife later married the future «u»1st Earl FitzWalter «/u»
