«b»Theudebald«/b» or «b»Theodebald«/b» (in «u»modern English «/u», «i»Theobald«/i»; in «u»French «/u», «i»Thibaud«/i» or «i»Théodebald«/i»; in «u»German «/u», «i»Theudowald«/i») (c. 535\endash 555), son of «u»Theudebert I «/u» and Deuteria, was the king of «u»Metz «/u», «u»Rheims «/u», or «u»Austrasia «/u»\emdash as it's variously called\emdash from 547 or 548 to 555.
He was only thirteen years of age when he succeeded and of ill health. However, the loyalty of the nobility to his father's memory preserved the peace during his minority. He married «u»Waldrada «/u», daughter of the «u»Lombard «/u» king «u»Wacho «/u» and his stepsister (a sister of his father's second wife). This marriage fortified the alliance betweent Austrasia and Lombardy.
Nevertheless, Theudebald could not hold on to the conquests of his father in the north of «u»Italia «/u». The «u»Byzantine Emperor «/u» «u»Justinian I «/u» sent an army under the command of «u»Narses «/u» in 552 and, like his father before him, Theudebald avoided direct confrontation with it.
After a prolonged sickness and prostration, he died in 555. His realm passed finally outside of the family of «u»Theuderic I «/u» and was united to the kingdoms of his great-uncle «u»Clotaire I «/u», who would soon become king of all the «u»Franks «/u».
