«b»Sigismund«/b» (died «u»524«/u») was king of the «u»Burgundians <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgundians>«/u» from «u»516«/u» to his death. He was the son of king «u»Gundobad <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gundobad>«/u», whom he succeeded in 516.
The «u»6th century «/u», «u»Christian «/u» or not, was a violent age: when his son opposed him in «u»517,«/u» and insulted his new wife, Sigismund had him strangled. Then, overcome with remorse, Sigismund retreated to the monastery that he had founded.
His bones were recovered from the well at «u»Columelle «/u» where his body had been thrown, and a shrine developed near Agaune. Eventually Sigismund was «u»canonized«/u».
Correspondence has survived between Avitus, who was a poet and one of the last masters of the classical arts, and Sigismund.
In the «u»14th century«/u», «u»Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_IV%2C_Holy_Roman_Emperor>«/u», transferred Sigismund's «u»relics «/u» to «u»Prague <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prague>«/u», hence he has become a «u»patron saint <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patron_saint>«/u» of the «u»Czech Republic <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czech_Republic>«/u».
