William "gave, before his death, for his soul and that of his brother William de Tanton, the homage and service due in Skutherskelf to Healaugh Priory" - William de Tanton was his wife's deceased brother from whom she inherited the family estates. {-N.E.Hist.Gen.Register 120:170} Is he the William de Mowbray who was among the northern barons who rose against King John in 1215, or perhaps a son? The rebel Williamis described as "small as a dwarf" ("Histoire des ducs de Normandie," p.145) - his chief estates were around Thirsk, Kirby Malzeard and Burton in Lonsdale in Yorkshire, and in and about Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire; he succeded to his lands in 1194 upon attaining his majority (i.e. he was born ca. 1173); he also had lands in Normandy; this baron was one of the security committee appointed to assure adherence to the Magna Carta.
