Artavasdes I of Armenia«/b» (also called «b»Artavazd«/b», «u»Armenian «/u»: (reigned «u»160 BC «/u»-«u»115 BC «/u») was the son of «u»Artaxias I «/u» and «u»Queen Satenik «/u».
Artavasdes repelled several attempts by «u»Parthians «/u» to invade Armenia but was eventually defeated by «u»Mithridates «/u», who annexed parts of Eastern Armenia and took his son, «u»Tigranes the Great «/u» as hostage.
According to Professor «u»Cyril Toumanoff «/u», Artavasdes I can be identified with the Armenian king who, according to the medieval Georgian annals, interfered in Iberia at the request of local nobility and installed his son, «u»Artaxias «/u», on the throne of Iberia, thereby inaugurating the «u»Iberian Artaxiad dynasty «/u».«u»[1]
