      «b»Amaziah
      «/b»Meaning: strengthened by «u»Jehovah «/u».
The name of four biblical men:
      A «u»Levite «/u», son of «u»Hilkiah «/u», of the descendants of «u»Ethan «/u» the Merarite («u»1 Chr. 6:45 «/u»).
The son and successor of «u»Joash «/u», and eighth king of the separate kingdom of «u»Judah «/u» («u»2 Kings 14:1-4 «/u»). He began his reign by punishing the murderers of his father («u»5-7 «/u»; «u»2 Chr. 25:3-5 «/u»). He was the first to employ a mercenary army of 100,000 Israelite soldiers, which he did in his attempt to bring the «u»Edomites «/u» again under the yoke of «u»Judah «/u» («u»2 Chr. 25:5,6 «/u»). He was commanded by a «u»prophet «/u» of the Lord to send back the mercenaries, which he did («u»2 Chr. 25:7-10,13 «/u»), much to their annoyance. His obedience to this command was followed by a decisive victory over the «u»Edomites «/u» («u»2 Chr. 25:14-16 «/u»). Amaziah began to worship some of the idols he took from the Edomites, and this was his ruin, for he was vanquished by «u»Joash «/u», king of «u»Israel «/u», whom he challenged to battle. The disaster he thus brought upon «u»Judah «/u» by his infatuation for proclaiming war against Israel probably the cause of the conspiracy by which he lost his life («u»2 Kings 14:8-14,19 «/u»). He was slain at «u»Lachish «/u», where he had fled, and his body was brought upon horses to «u»Jerusalem «/u», where it was buried in the royal sepulcher («u»2 Kings 14:19,20 «/u»; «u»2 Chr. 25:27,28 «/u»).
A priest of the golden calves at «u»Bethel «/u»).
The father of Joshah, one of the «u»Simeonite «/u» chiefs in the time of «u»Hezekiah «/u» («u»1 Chr. 4:34 «/u»).
