«/b»Necho II is most likely the pharaoh mentioned in several books of the «u»Bible «/u» (see «u»Hebrew Bible «/u» / «u»Old Testament «/u»). The «u»Book of Kings «/u» states that Necho II met «u»King Josiah «/u» of the «u»Kingdom of Judah «/u» at «u»Megiddo «/u» and killed him («u»2 Kings 23:29 «/u») (see «u»Battle of Megiddo (609 BC) «/u»). Another book called the «u»Book of Chronicles «/u» «u»2 Chronicles 35:20-27 «/u» gives a lengthier account and 2 Chronicles 35:20 states that when Josiah had prepared the «u»temple «/u», Necho king of Egypt came up to fight against «u»Carchemish «/u» by the «u»Euphrates River «/u» and that King Josiah was fatally wounded by an «u»Egyptian «/u» archer. He was then brought back to «u»Jerusalem «/u» to die. Necho is quoted as saying:
"What quarrel is there between you and me, O king of Judah? It is not you I am attacking at this time, but the house with which I am at war. God has told me to hurry; so stop opposing God, who is with me, or he will destroy you." (NIV)
However, at Carchemish in the summer of «u»605 BC «/u» (or «u»607 BC «/u» by some sources) an important battle was fought there by the «u»Babylonian «/u» army of «u»Nebuchadrezzar II «/u» and that of Pharaoh Necho II of Egypt (see the record contained in the «u»Book of Jeremiah «/u» chapter 46 regarding Egypt and its defeat). The aim of Necho's campaign was to contain the Westward advance of the «u»Babylonian Empire «/u» and cut off its trade route across the Euphrates. However, the «u»Egyptians «/u» were defeated by the unexpected attack of the Babylonians and were eventually expelled from Syria.
