«b»Alfonso of Hauteville«/b» («u»Latin «/u» «i»Anfusus«/i»; «i»c«/i».1120 \endash 10 October 1144), second son of «u»Roger II of Sicily «/u» and «u»Elvira of Castile «/u», was the «u»prince of Capua «/u» from 1135 to his death.
He was named after his maternal grandfather, «u»Alfonso VI of Castile «/u». His maternal grandmother was Alfonso VI's fourth wife Isabel, possibly the same person as Zaida, converted daughter-in-law of «u»al-Mutamid «/u» of «u»Seville «/u».
Though his birth date is unknown, he was old enough to wage war to maintain his principality when, in 1135, his father gave him the «u»principality of Capua «/u», thus dethroning the rebellious reigning prince, «u»Robert II «/u», of the House of «u»Drengot «/u». He appointed his chancellor «u»Guarin «/u» to act as the young Alfonso's administrator. This action effectually brought Capua into the sphere of Hauteville power, though Roger attended Alfonso's enthronement as «u»suzerain «/u», not ruler. On «u»25 July «/u» «u»1139 «/u», by the «u»Treaty of Mignano «/u», he received the papal recognition of «u»Innocent II«/u», taking up the same position «i»vis-a-vis«/i» the papacy which the old Drengot princes long held.
On the death of «u»Sergius VII of Naples «/u», who had thrown open his city's gates to Roger II, Alfonso was elected duke of Naples. In April 1140, with his elder brother «u»Roger III «/u», whom their father had made «u»duke of Apulia «/u», he invaded the «u»Abruzzo «/u», conquering much land including the important coastal city of Pescara. He stretched his dominion as far as the «u»Tronto «/u» river. He died on «u»10 October «/u» «u»1144 «/u» during a second invasion with his brother, this time in «u»Latium «/u» against «u»Pope Lucius II «/u», where they marched on «u»Rieti «/u» and «u»Cagnano Amiterno «/u».
