Adalbert I«/b» (c. 820 \endash 886«u»[1]«/u») was the «u»margrave of Tuscany «/u» from about 847.
He was the son of «u»Margrave Boniface II «/u», who had been despoiled of his fiefs by the Emperor «u»Lothair I «/u», and successor of his elder brother «u»Aganus «/u». The reign of Adalbert was long and successful.
He took the side of «u»Carloman «/u», «u»King of Bavaria «/u», against «u»Charles the Bald «/u», «u»King of France «/u», in the struggle for the «u»Kingdom of Italy «/u». This even though the latter was supported by the «u»pope «/u». When the Roman court persisted in this "interference", Adalbert marched on the «u»eternal city «/u», forced «u»John VIII «/u» to take refuge in the «u»St Peter's Basilica «/u», and forced the Roman citizens to swear fealty to Carloman. Little effect on him had the excommunication of Pope John.
He died in 884 or, more probably 886, and was succeeded by his son «u»Adalbert II «/u».
