«b»Marcus Antonius Creticus«/b» (flourished «u»2nd century BC «/u» & «u»1st century BC «/u») was a «u»Roman «/u» politician, member of the «u»Antonius «/u» family. Creticus was son of «u»Marcus Antonius Orator «/u» and by his marriage to «u»Julia Antonia «/u» he had three sons triumvir «u»Mark Antony «/u», «u»Gaius Antonius «/u» and «u»Lucius Antonius «/u».
He was elected «u»praetor «/u» in «u»74 BC «/u» and in the next year he received an extraordinary commission, similar to that bestowed upon triumvir «u»Pompey «/u» by the Gabinian law years later and on his father three decades before, to clear the «u»Mediterranean Sea «/u» of the threat of piracy, and thereby assist the operations against King «u»Mithridates VI of Pontus «/u».
Creticus not only failed in the task, but plundered the provinces he was supposed to protect from robbery («u»Sallust «/u», «i»Hist.«/i» iii., fragments ed. B. Maurenbrecher, p. 108; «u»Marcus Velleius Paterculus «/u» ii. 31; «u»Cicero «/u», «i»In Verrem«/i», iii. 91). He attacked the Cretans, who had made an alliance with the pirates, but was totally defeated, most of his ships being sunk. «u»Diodorus Siculus «/u» (xl. 1) states that he only saved himself by a disgraceful treaty. As a result of this defeat he was mockingly given the byname «i»Creticus«/i», which means conqueror of «u»Crete «/u» and also man made of chalk when translated from Latin. He died soon afterwards («u»72 «/u»-«u»71 «/u») in Crete. All authorities are agreed as to his avarice and incompetence.
