Marcus Atius Balbus«/b» (105 BC\endash 51 BC) was the son and heir of an elder Marcus Atius Balbus (148 BC\endash 87 BC) and «u»Pompeia «/u». Pompeia was a sister to consul «u»Gnaeus Pompeius Strabo «/u», father of triumvir «u»Pompey «/u». The family of the elder Balbus came from a «u»Roman «/u» senatorial family «u»plebs «/u» status from Aricia (modern Ariccia, «u»Italy «/u»). 'Balbus' in Latin means «u»«i»stammer «/u»«/i». The younger Balbus was born and raised in Aricia.
Balbus married «u»Julia «/u» Minor, second eldest sister of dictator Gaius «u»Julius Caesar «/u». Julia bore Balbus three daughters and they were:
«tab» Atia Balba Prima - mother of «u»Quintus Pedius «/u» who served as a general and consul.
«u»«tab»Atia Balba Caesonia «/u» - mother of «u»Octavia Minor «/u» (fourth wife of triumvir «u»Mark Antony «/u») and of first Emperor «u»Augustus «/u».
«tab»Atia Balba Tertia - mother of «u»Lucius Pinarius «/u», who was a political supporter of Mark Antony.
He served as a «u»praetor «/u» in 62 BC and he managed to obtain the government of «u»Sardinia «/u». Under Caesar in 59 BC, Balbus was appointed along with Pompey on a board of commissioners under Julian Law to divide estates in «u»Campania «/u» among the commoners. «u»Cicero «/u» stated that Pompey would say as a joke about Balbus, that he was not a person of any importance.
