«b»Marcus Aufidius«/b» (or «b»Alfidius«/b») «b»Lurco«/b» or known as «b»Aufidius Lurco«/b», was a «u»Roman «/u» magistrate who lived in the «u»1st century BC «/u». Lurco was a member of the «u»gens «/u» «u»Aufidius «/u», a Roman family of «u»Plebs «/u» status, who appeared in the «u»Roman Republic «/u» and «u»Roman Empire «/u». They became a family of consular rank. Lurco originally came from Fundi (modern «u»Fondi «/u», «u»Italy «/u»).
«b»High office
«/b»According to «u»Suetonius «/u», Lurco held a high office at «u»Rome «/u». In «u»61 BC «/u», he was a «u»Tribune «/u» of the «u»Plebs «/u». During his time as Tribune, he was the author of the «i»Lex Aufidia«/i» or «i»Lex Aufidia de Ambitu«/i». The «i»Lex Aufidia«/i» was a law concerning the «u»Roman assemblies «/u» or Comitia. If a candidate, promised and paid money to a tribe at the Comitia, he should pay yearly 3,000 sesterces during his life. However, if the candidate, merely promised and did not pay, the candidate should be exempt. This caused a witted argument between Lurco and «u»Publius Clodius Pulcher «/u».
Lurco in «u»59 BC «/u», was one of the witnesses called for the defence at the impeachment of «u»Lucius Valerius Flaccus «/u». Between «u»52 BC «/u»-«u»51 BC «/u», Lurco prosecuted and procured for the acts of violence and the conviction of Sextus Clodius Pulcher for bringing the corpse of «u»Publius Clodius Pulcher «/u» into the «u»Curia Julia «/u».
«b»Family
«/b»Lurco was the first person in «u»Rome «/u» to fatten peacocks (see «u»peafowl «/u») for sale and from this he became wealthy. The wife of Lurco is unknown. We know, he had a daughter called «u»Aufidia «/u», who married «u»Marcus Livius Drusus Claudianus «/u», a future «u»praetor «/u». He was therefore the maternal grandfather of their children, Roman Empress «u»Livia «/u» Drusilla and consul «u»Marcus Livius Drusus «/u». Lurco was the great-grandfather to «u»Roman Emperor «/u» «u»Tiberius «/u» and Roman General «u»Nero Claudius Drusus «/u».
