Danaus«/b», or «b»Danaos«/b» ("sleeper" ; Greek «u»<http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%CE%94%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%B1%CF%8C%CF%82>«/u»), was a «u»Greek mythological character «/u», twin brother of «u»Aegyptus «/u» and son of «u»Achiroe «/u» and «u»Belus «/u», a mythical king of «u»Egypt «/u». The myth of Danaus is a foundation legend (or re-foundation legend) of «u»Argos «/u», one of the foremost «u»Mycenaean «/u» cities of the «u»Peloponnesus «/u». In Homer's \ul«i»Iliad \ulnone«/i», "«u»Danaans «/u»" ("tribe of Danaus") and "«u»Argives «/u»" commonly designate the Greek forces opposed to the «u»Trojans «/u».
Danaus had fifty daughters, the «b»Danaides«/b», twelve of whom were born to «u»Polyxo «/u» and rest to «u»Pieria «/u» and other women, and his twin brother, Aegyptus, had fifty sons. Aegyptus commanded that his sons marry the Danaides. Danaus elected to flee instead, and to that purpose, he built a ship, the first ship that ever was.
In it, he fled to «u»Argos «/u», to which he was connected by his descent from «u»Io «/u», the maiden wooed by «u»Zeus «/u» and turned into a heifer and pursued by «u»Hera «/u» until she found asylum in Egypt. Argos at the time was ruled by King «u»Pelasgus «/u», the «u»eponym «/u» of all autochthonous inhabitants who had lived in Greece since the beginning, also called «u»Gelanor «/u» (he who laughs). The Danaides ask Pelasgus for protection when they arrive, the event portrayed in \ul«i»The Suppliants \ulnone«/i» by «u»Aeschylus «/u». Protection is granted after a vote by the Argives.
