Uranus«/b» is the «u»Latinized «/u» form of «b»Ouranos«/b» (), the «u»Greek «/u» word for «u»sky «/u» ( a cognate of the English word «b»air«/b» and the Hindi word «b»oura«/b» (to fly)). In «u»Greek mythology «/u» «i»Ouranos«/i» or «b»Father Sky«/b», is personified as the son and husband of «u»Gaia «/u», Mother Earth (Hesiod, \ul«i»Theogony \ulnone«/i»). Uranus and Gaia were ancestors of most of the Greek gods, but no «u»cult «/u» addressed directly to Uranus survived into Classical times, and Uranus does not appear among the usual themes of «u»Greek painted pottery «/u». Elemental Earth, Sky and «u»Styx «/u» might be joined, however, in a solemn invocation in Homeric epic.
Most Greeks considered Uranus to be primordial («i»protogenos«/i»), and gave him no parentage. Under the influence of the philosophers, «u»Cicero «/u», in «i»De Natura Deorum«/i» ("The Nature of the Gods"), claims that he was the offspring of the ancient gods «u»Aether «/u» and «u»Hemera «/u», Air and Day. According to the «u»Orphic Hymns «/u», Ouranos was the son of the personification of night, «u»Nyx «/u». His equivalent in «u»Roman mythology «/u» was «u»Caelus «/u», likewise from «i»caelum«/i» the Latin word for "sky".
