Cronus«/b», «b»Kronos«/b» or «b»Cronos«/b» («u»Ancient Greek «/u» «i»Krónos«/i») was the leader and the youngest of the first generation of «u»Titans «/u», divine descendants of «u»Gaia «/u», the earth, and «u»Uranus «/u», the sky. He overthrew his father and ruled during the mythological «u»Golden Age «/u», until he was overthrown by his own sons, «u»Zeus «/u», «u»Hades «/u», and «u»Poseidon «/u», and imprisoned in «u»Tartarus «/u».
As a result of his association with the virtuous Golden Age, Cronus was worshipped as a «u»harvest «/u» «u»deity «/u», overseeing crops such as grains, nature and agriculture. He was usually depicted with a «u»sickle «/u», which he used to harvest crops and which was also the weapon he used to «u»castrate «/u» and depose Uranus. In «u»Athens «/u», on the twelfth day of the Attic month of «u»Hekatombaion «/u», a festival called «u»Kronia «/u» was held in honor of Cronus to celebrate the harvest. Cronus was also identified in «u»classical antiquity «/u» with the «u»Roman deity «/u» «u»Saturn «/u».
The etymology of the name is obscure. It may be related to "horned", suggesting a possible connection with the ancient Indian demon «u»Kroni «/u» or the Levantine deity «u»El «/u». In the Alexandrian and «u»Renaissance«/u» periods there was some confusion with the word \ul«i»Chronos \ulnone«/i», meaning «u»time «/u».
