Hazarmaveth«/b» is the third of thirteen sons of «u»Joktan «/u», who was a son of «u»Eber «/u», son of «u»Shem «/u» in the table of the «u»Sons of Noah «/u» in «u»Genesis «/u» chapter 10 and «u»1 Chronicles «/u»chapter 1 in the «u»Bible «/u». This "Table of Nations" lists purported founders of neighboring ethnic groups or "nations".
Genesis 10:26 «i»"...And Joktan hath begotten «u»Almodad «/u», and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and «u»Jerah «/u»..."«/i»
Hazarmaveth, also transcribed «i»Hazarmaueth«/i», means "dwelling of death" (Hitchcock's Bible Dictionary) and is composed of two parts in «u»Hebrew «/u»: «i»hazar/«/i» ("dwelling" or "court") and «i»maveth/mawet«/i» ("death"). (There are alternative systems for transliterating Hebrew into Latin letters.)
Scholars of «u»Semitic languages «/u» have related the name to the ancient region of «u»Hadramaut «/u» in the modern Southern Arabian nation of «u»Yemen «/u», and indeed, one of the other sons of Joktan is «u»Sheba «/u», the name of an ancient Southern Arabian kingdom. However, the etymology of Hadramaut may be from the Graeco-Roman period.
