Togarmah«/b» («u»Hebrew «/u»: /«i»Togarmah«/i» ; «u»Armenian «/u»:«u» «/u»/«i»T'orgom«/i» ; «u»Georgian «/u»: «i»T'argamos«/i») third son of «u»Gomer «/u», and grandson of «u»Japheth «/u», brother of «u»Ashkenaz «/u» and «u»Riphat «/u» («u»Genesis 10:3 «/u»). He is held to be either the ancestor of the peoples of the «u»South Caucasus «/u» (the «u»Georgians «/u» and the «u»Armenians «/u») or the «u»Turkic peoples «/u».
«b»Togarmah's descendants
Caucasian/Armenian theory
«/b»Jewish historian «u»Flavius Josephus «/u» (37 \endash c. 100 AD), Roman Catholic priest «u»Jerome «/u» (c. 347 \endash 420 AD) and «u»Isidore of Seville «/u» (c. 560 \endash 636 AD) regarded Togarmah as the father of the «u»Phrygians «/u».
Saint «u»Hippolytus «/u» (c. 170-c. 236 AD), the Father of the Church History «u»Eusebius of Caesarea «/u» (c. 263 \endash c. 339 AD), and the «u»Christian «/u» «u»bishop «/u» «u»Theodoret «/u» (c. 393 \endash c. 457 AD) regarded him as a father of «u»Armenians «/u».
Both Armenian «u»Moses of Chorene «/u» and Georgian «u»Leonti Mroveli «/u» regarded Togarmah as the founder of their nations along with other «u»Caucasian people «/u».
In native «u»Armenian language «/u», Armenians still call themselves "Hayer" and their county "Hayastan" (the land of Hayk) after their founder «u»Haik «/u» who was son of Togarmah according to the both above mentioned Georgian and Armenian historians. This is true for «u»Georgia «/u» (Kartlos/Sakartvelo) and other «u»Peoples of the Caucasus «/u» like «u»Kakheti «/u» (after Kakhos- son of «u»Kartlos«/u») or «u»Leketi «/u» (after Lekos son of Togarmah) according to «u»Leonti Mroveli «/u».
Other names were either changed or replaced by Greek, French or English descriptions, but the native language and self-designation in Caucasus preserve some historical facts and figures reflecting the recorded history of Georgian and Armenian people.
According to «u»The Georgian Chronicles «/u» and «u»The History of Armenia «/u» Togarmah lived in «u»Babylon «/u» who received the land between two Seas («u»Black Sea «/u» and «u»Caspian Sea «/u») and two Mountains («u»Mount Elbrus «/u» and «u»Mount Ararat «/u») in his possession when people started division of lands and migration in different parts of the world. He then settled near «u»Mount Ararat «/u» and divided his land among his sons: «u»[1]«/u» «u»[2]«/u»
«u»Haik «/u» ( - first son of Togarmah, inherited «u»Mount Ararat «/u» and founded the Armenian nation.
«u»Kartlos «/u» ( - settled in north-east from Ararat, founder of «u»Kartli «/u» («u»Sa'kartvelo «/u») who united other brothers and founded the Georgian nation.
«u»Bardos «/u»
«u»Movakos «/u» (Movkans)
«u»Lekos «/u» (Lek) - settled in «u»Caucasus Mountains «/u»
«u»Heros «/u» (Herans)- settled in the eastern part of Ararat
«u»Caucas «/u» (Kovkases) - settled beyond the «u»Caucasus Range «/u»
«u»Egros «/u» (Egers) - settled between the «u»Black Sea «/u» and «u»Likhi Range «/u». (western Georgia)
«b»Turkic Theory
«/b»According to other records, Togarmah is regarded as the ancestor of the «u»Turkic peoples «/u». For example, The «u»French «/u» «u»Benedictine monk «/u» and scholar «u»Calmet «/u» (1672-1757) places Togarmah in «u»«i»Scythia «/u» and «u»Turcomania «/u»«/i» (in the «u»Eurasian Steppes «/u» and «u»Central Asia «/u»).«u»[3]«/u» Also in «u»his letters «/u», «u»King Joseph ben Aaron «/u», the ruler of the «u»Khazars «/u», writes:
«i»"You ask us also in your epistle: "Of what people, of what family, and of what tribe are you?" Know that we are descended from Japhet, through his son Togarmah. I have found in the genealogical books of my ancestors that Togarmah had ten sons. These are their names: the eldest was Ujur (Agiôr - «u»Uyghur «/u»), the second Tauris (Tirôsz - «u»Tauri «/u»), the third Avar (Avôr - «u»Avar «/u»), the fourth Uauz (Ugin - «u»Oghuz«/u»), the fifth Bizal (Bizel - «u»Pecheneg«/u»), the sixth Tarna, the seventh Khazar («u»Khazar«/u»), the eighth Janur (Zagur), the ninth Bulgar (Balgôr - «u»Bulgar«/u»), the tenth Sawir (Szavvir/Szabir - «u»Sabir «/u»)."«u»«/i»[4]«/u»
In Jewish sources too Togarmah is listed as the father of the «u»Turkic peoples «/u»: The medieval «u»Jewish «/u» scholar: «u»Joseph ben Gorion «/u» lists in his «u»«i»Josippon «/u»«/i» the ten sons of Togarma thusly:
Kozar (the «u»Khazars«/u»)
Pacinak (the «u»Pechenegs «/u»)
Aliqanosz (the «u»Alans «/u»)
Bulgar (the «u»Bulgars «/u»)
Ragbiga (Ragbina, Ranbona)
Turqi (possibly the «u»Kökturks «/u»)
Buz (the «u»Oghuz «/u»)
Zabuk
Ungari (either the «u»Hungarians «/u» or the «u»Oghurs «/u»/«u»Onogurs «/u»)
Tilmac (Tilmic)."
In the «u»«i»Chronicles of Jerahmeel «/u»«/i», they are listed as:
Cuzar (the «u»Khazars «/u»)
Pasinaq (the «u»Pechenegs «/u»)
Alan (the «u»Alans «/u»)
Bulgar (the «u»Bulgars «/u»)
Kanbinah
Turq (possibly the «u»Kökturks «/u»)
Buz (the «u»Oghuz «/u»)
Zakhukh
Ugar (either the «u»Hungarians «/u» or the «u»Oghurs «/u»/«u»Onogurs «/u»)
Tulmes
Another medieval «u»rabbinic work «/u», the «u»«i»Book of Jasher «/u»«/i», further corrupts these same names into:
Buzar (the «u»Khazars «/u»)
Parzunac (the «u»Pechenegs «/u»)
Balgar (the «u»Bulgars «/u»)
Elicanum (the «u»Alans «/u»)
Ragbib
Tarki (the «u»Kökturks «/u»)
Bid (the «u»Oghuz «/u»)
Zebuc
Ongal («u»Hungarians «/u» or «u»Oghurs «/u»/«u»Onogurs «/u»)
Tilmaz.
In Arabic records, Togorma's tribes are these:
Khazar
Badsanag
Asz-alân
Bulghar
Zabub
Fitrakh (Kotrakh?) (can be divided like Ko-etrakh. etrakh means turks, sounds like gokturks)
Nabir
Andsar (Ajhar)
Talmisz
Adzîgher.
The Arabic account however, also adds an 11th clan: Anszuh.
Yet another tradition of the sons of Togarmah appears in «u»Pseudo-Philo «/u», where their names are said to be "Abiud, Saphath, Asapli, and Zepthir". The «i»Chronicles of Jerahmeel«/i», in addition to giving the above names from «i»Yosippon«/i», elsewhere lists Togarmah's sons similarly as "Abihud, Shafat, and Yaftir".
«b»Biblical Mention
«/b»Togarmah is mentioned as being a Nation from the Far North in the Bible. Bible NCV Ezk 38:6 - "There will also be Gomer with all its troops and the nation of Togarmah from the far north with all its troops-mant nations with you."
In Ezekiel 27:14 Togarmah is mentioned after Tubal, Javan and Mesech as supplying horses and mules to the Tyrians, and in Ezekiel 38:6 it is said to have supplied soldiers to the army of Gog (Gyges of Lydia).
