Mizraim«/b» («u»Hebrew «/u»: / , «u»Modern «/u» «i»Mitzráyim«/i» «u»Tiberian «/u» «i»Mi«/i» / «i»Mi«/i» ; cf. «u»Arabic «/u» , «i»Mi«/i») is the «u»Hebrew «/u» name for the land of «u»Egypt «/u», with the dual suffix «i»-«/i», perhaps referring to the "two Egypts": «u»Upper Egypt «/u» and «u»Lower Egypt «/u».
«u»Ugaritic«/u» inscriptions refer to Egypt as «i»Msrm«/i», in the «u»Amarna tablets «/u» it is called «i»Misri«/i», and Assyrian and Babylonian records called Egypt «i»Musur«/i» and «i»Musri«/i». The Arabic word for Egypt is «i»Misr«/i» (pronounced «i»Masr«/i» in colloquial Arabic), and Egypt's official name is «i»Gumhuriyah Misr al-'Arabiyah«/i» (the Arab Republic of Egypt).
According to «u»Genesis 10 «/u», Mizraim was the younger brother of «u»Cush «/u» and elder brother of «u»Phut «/u» and «u»Canaan «/u», whose families together made up the «u»Hamite «/u»branch of «u»Noah «/u»'s descendants. Mizraim's sons were «u»Ludim «/u», «u»Anamim «/u», «u»Lehabim «/u», «u»Naphtuhim «/u», «u»Pathrusim «/u», «u»Casluhim «/u» (out of whom came «u»Philistim «/u»), and «u»Caphtorim «/u».«u»[1]
«/u»
According to «u»Eusebius «/u»' «u»«i»Chronicon «/u»«/i», «u»Manetho «/u» had suggested that the great age of antiquity in which the later Egyptians boasted had actually preceded the flood, and that they were really descended from Mizraim, who settled there anew. A similar story is related by medieval Islamic historians such as «u»Sibt ibn al-Jawzi «/u», the Egyptian «u»Ibn Abd-el-Hakem «/u», and the Persians «u»al-Tabari «/u» and «u»Muhammad Khwandamir «/u», stating that the «u»pyramids «/u», etc. had been built by the wicked races before the deluge, but that Noah's descendant Mizraim (Masar or Mesr) was entrusted with reoccupying the region afterward. The Islamic accounts also make Masar the son of a Bansar or Beisar and grandson of Ham, rather than a direct son of Ham, and add that he lived to the age of 700. Some scholars think it likely that Mizraim is a dual form of the word «i»Misr«/i» meaning "land", and was translated literally into «u»Ancient Egyptian «/u» as «i»Ta-Wy«/i» (the Two Lands) by early «u»pharaohs «/u» at «u»Thebes «/u», who later founded the «u»Middle Kingdom «/u».
But according to «u»George Syncellus «/u», the «u»«i»Book of Sothis «/u»«/i», supposedly by Manetho, had identified Mizraim with the legendary first pharaoh «u»Menes «/u», said to have unified the «u»Old Kingdom «/u» and built Memphis. Misraim also seems to correspond to «u»Misor «/u», said in Phoenician mythology to have been father of «u»Taautus «/u» who was given Egypt, and later scholars noticed that this also recalls Menes, whose son or successor was said to be «u»Athothis «/u».
In «u»Judaism «/u», «i»Mitzrayim«/i» has been connected with the word «i»meitzar«/i» ( ), meaning "sea strait", possibly alluding to narrow gulfs from both sides of «u»Sinai peninsula «/u». It also can mean "boundaries, limits, restrictions" or "narrow place".
However, author «u»David Rohl «/u» has suggested a different interpretation: «i»"Amongst the followers of «u»Meskiagkasher «/u» [Cush] was his younger 'brother' -- in his own right a strong and charismatic leader of men. He is the head of the falcon tribe -- the descendants of Horus the 'Far Distant'. The Bible calls this new Horus-king 'Mizraim' but this name is, in reality, no more than an epithet. It means 'follower of Asr' or 'Asar' (Arabic m-asr with the Egyptian preposition m 'from'). Mizraim is merely m-Izra with the majestic plural ending 'im'. Likewise, that other great Semitic-speaking people -- the Assyrians -- called the country of the pharaohs 'Musri' (m-Usri)."«u»«/i»[2]
